TOUCHSCREEN TECHNOLOGIES
Elo Touch Solutions have a number of touch technologies available, all suited for different applications and environments. We have listed the commonest types below, along with their suggested applications and usage examples. For any other requirements, please contact us.
AccuTouch® 5-wire Resistive
Elo developed AccuTouch® technology with the harshest environments in mind, so it's no wonder that it excels in reliability, durability, and expected product life. Impervious to environmental conditions such as liquid spills and splashes and washdowns, these screens are the most contamination-resistant available. They deliver drift-free operation for a lifetime of 35 million finger touches.
AccuTouch touchscreens are based on proven five-wire resistive technology, the preferred solution for applications that demand reliability, input flexibility, and contamination resistance. The screens work with standard Elo controller/chip solutions and drivers under a wide variety of operating systems, and are available in a set of standard products as well as customized designs.
AccuTouch resistive touchscreens are available with proprietary Elo technology to deliver a touch response that is drift-free and accurate in high-use applications. It's designed to be integrated into almost any bezeled application for Elo reliability and quality.
Resistive touch screens are made of at least two layers of flexible sheet (polycarbonate, in this case) laid atop a glass substrate. The sheets are coated with a resistive substance and are kept separated by tiny dots. When the touch screen is pressed, the flexible layers are pushed together, generating a change in resistance on both vertical and horizontal axis. This change in resistance is measured by sensors on the edges of the screen and the degree of change is measured as a touch point.
Elo AccuTouch delivers both X and Y measurements made on a stable rear glass layer where many other resistive touchscreen designs use a flexing plastic coversheet to measure only one axis. As a result, AccuTouch resistive touchscreens provide a longer product life, designed to withstand more than 35 million touches.
AccuTouch touchscreens can be sealed against contamination to support NEMA 4/4x/12 and IP65 standards. Every screen meets pencil hardness 3H per ASTM D3363. Agency approvals include UL, cUL, TÜV, CE and FCC Class A.
Benefits
Five-wire resistive is the most accurate and reliable touchscreen technology. Elo, the inventor of resistive technology, takes five-wire resistive several steps further with its proprietary AccuTouch® touchscreens.
-
Stable, drift-free operation
-
Broad input flexibility
-
Contamination resistance
-
Accuracy in high-use applications
-
Long product life
-
Meets NEMA 4/4x/12 and IP65 standards
Accuracy
Thanks to its inherently stable design, Elo AccuTouch® five-wire resistive touchscreens have unmatched accuracy over time. The initial setup should last the life of the product, because only a two-point video alignment is required to normalize the touchscreen and video coordinate systems.
Applications
AccuTouch® technology is the workhorse of resistive touchscreens, providing unsurpassed performance in POS, industrial, medical, and transportation applications. Touch the screen with a finger, gloved hand, fingernail, or object such as a credit card, and you'll receive a fast, accurate response every time.

IntelliTouch® Surface Acoustic Wave
IntelliTouch® surface wave is the optical standard of touch. Its pure glass construction provides superior optical performance and makes it the most scratch-resistant technology available. It is nearly impossible to physically "wear out" this touchscreen.
IntelliTouch Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) is a cost-effective alternative to projected capacitive (PCAP) touch technology that offers better optical clarity with significantly smaller border width and an edge designed for your bezeled applications. Three axes of touch information are used to precisely discern up to two simultaneous touch locations anywhere on the screen. IntelliTouch solutions offer a simple bill of material, a less complex manufacturing and touchscreen integration process, and less capital investment than PCAP technologies. When combined with Elo's 3200-series controller, powered by eSAW™ technology, IntelliTouch offers an extreme touch performance of 4-times the sensitivity of traditional SAW touchscreens.
SAW touchscreen technology delivers superior image clarity, resolution, light transmission, and reliability because it utilizes clear glass that continues to work even if scratched. There are no coatings, plastic films or moving parts to wear out or be damaged. The active area of the touchscreen is resistant to chemicals such as acetone, toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, isopropyl alcohol, methyl alcohol, ethyl acetate, ammonia-based glass cleaners, gasoline, kerosene, and vinegar.
The stable, drift-free operation of Surface Acoustic Wave touchscreen technology provides an accurate touch response measured on three axes using a finger, gloved hand, or passive stylus. Elo’s sensitive touch response recognizes location and amount of pressure applied. Elo has tested IntelliTouch touchscreens to more than 50 million touches in one location without failure, using a stylus simulating a finger.
Customization capabilities include logos, clear icons, border buttons, and other enhancements can be added during the design cycle. IntelliTouch can scale across a wide range of screen sizes, without performance degradation. With SecureTouch®, the strength of the touchscreen can be increased by increasing the thickness of the glass up to 12mm.
IntelliTouch is available in a number of variants. Standard IntelliTouch offers single-point touch recognition on a sensor mounted on a screen with a bezeled surround. IntelliTouch Plus extends this to dual-point touch capabilities. For those requiring a more streamlined design, IntelliTouch Zero Bezel (ZB, aka iTouch) combines the optical clarity of a clear glass IntelliTouch® SAW touchscreen into a zero-bezel panel, available for both single-touch and dual-touch applications, yielding a high performance solution at a price well below that of traditional projected capacitive (PCAP) touchscreen.

Infrared / Optical
Infrared touchscreen technology uses multiple optical sensors to detect the touch point, which registers the touch just before physical contact with the screen. This means that users can apply zero or light touch to the screen to initiate a response, and any input device, such as a finger, gloved finger, pen, or stylus will work.
Infrared solutions feature four sensors embedded into the frame of the screen. This four sensor system can easily resolve two touch point requirements and can be extended to track a minimum of four touches with extreme accuracy. Sophisticated algorithms can uniquely determine the absolute position of multiple objects despite occlusion or object coalescence, enabling four touches with improved coverage and accuracy.
Just like Elo's IntelliTouch® surface acoustic wave touchscreen technology, surface coating overlays are not used on the touch screen surface, which creates a crystal clear image. In addition, scratches on the touch surface will not affect the touch screen operation. This is important for high-use public environments such as lobbies, way-finding or kiosks.
